What a pro does

An overflowing toilet is either the fixture or the line beyond it, and a plumber sorts that out in the first few minutes. A single toilet that backs up while everything else runs clear is a clog at the trapway or in the branch behind it, and an auger sized for a closet bend usually settles it. Water rising around the base is a different story, since that means the blockage is past the flange and pressure is finding the wax seal. Where a house sits changes the odds. In small towns across the coastal plain, plenty of homes run to a septic tank rather than a sewer main, and after a week of heavy rain a saturated drainfield can push back into the house through the lowest fixture in the place. A plumber checks the outside cleanout first, and on a septic property looks at the tank level too, because there's no sense spending time on the fixture if the trouble sits well past it. Pulling and resetting the fixture is what closes the job when the seal has been compromised.

Not by itself. When only that fixture misbehaves and other drains run normally, the problem is local to it. Once tubs, showers, or a second toilet start going at the same time, the main line is involved and the work moves outside to the cleanout.
